UN BALLO IN MASCHERA

2001
Painting by Valery Koroshilov
Oil on canvas, 100 x 80 cm. Private Collection, UK

In 1999 the BOC Covent Garden Festival organizers invited me to take part in an exhibition of original works to benefit the Royal Opera House. Each artist has been asked to produce an artwork related to the current repertoire. I chose to illustrate a scene from Giuseppe Verdi's Un Ballo In Maschera (A Masked Ball), remarkably rich with sharp dramatic situations. The love triangle is formed here by the king, the king's secretary and the secretary's wife, as in the original cast of Verdi's opera.

This painting has been published in colour in THE TIMES, April 2004
